10 Steps | To a Healthier and Happier You

How is your New Year’s resolution going? We try to start each year with a new resolution to work towards and in many cases, without realising, tend to aim a little too high. Here at Nimble we believe that the best resolutions are ones that you can build on and help you be the best version of yourself.

Step 1: Get a good sleep

According to the sleep foundation the amount of sleep you need each night is dependent on your age. The average person NEEDS 8 hours of sleep every night to be able to function at their best.

We've got some tips to help you get better, deeper and longer sleeps:

  • Shut off your electronic devices – try to avoid bright light powered screens at least 2 hours before you go to bed.
  • Don’t have caffeine after 4pm - caffeine can have effects that last up to 10-12 hours after consumption
  • Eat dinner at least 3 hours before bedtime – a full stomach can disrupt sleep and the heavier the meal the longer it takes for your stomach to settle and digest.
  • Go to bed and wake up the same time every day – even if you go to bed late occasionally, try to get up at your normal time

A good sleep routine will ensure that you feel refreshed, energised and ready to take on the next day! For more tips, read our article All About Sleep.

Step 2: Exercise for 1 hour a day

Exercising makes for better mental, emotional and physical health. Many of us find excuses not to exercise or feel as though we don’t have the time. Get your body moving and your blood flowing with these exercise tips:

  • Start simple – walk around the block before / after work or in your work break, join a gym, try boot camp, or group classes like yoga
  • Get a workout buddy – they’ll help encourage you when you don’t want to exercise and they’ll help motivate you to push yourself
  • Do exercise that you enjoy – when exercise is less of a chore it becomes something to look forward to
  • Join a team sport – some healthy competition is good motivation to get moving and make new friends

One of the greatest ways to feel your best is through exercise so start channelling your inner Elle Woods, fuel those endorphins and get happy!

Step 3: Eat well

Maintaining a well-balanced diet is important in maintaining an all-round healthy lifestyle. The types of food you eat can affect your mood so its best to eat foods that help fuel your body and give it nutrients to help you can lead a more active, healthy and happy life.

We’ve got the top tips to help you make better food choices:

  • Stay away from oily and fatty foods that can aggravate your skin and stomach
  • Eat fresh foods – fruits, vegetables, fibre, dairy and proteins
  • Reduce your salt, sugar and fat intake
  • Cut down portion sizes and be mindful of your calorie intake vs your exercise output
  • Buy cookbooks or search through our top healthy food Instagrammers to give you some recipe inspiration
  • Eat healthy pre and post workout snacks so you're not running on empty

Step 4: Have ‘me time’

Making time for yourself is key to your happiness. You should always leave aside time to relax, reduce anxiety and do the things you enjoy. We sometimes get caught up in the busyness that is life and forget to give ourselves a break. Do something you enjoy, whether it be cooking, reading, hiking, or try something completely new. Getting the chance to step back from our everyday routines can help you get a new perspective on things.

Step 5: Make goals

Give yourself goals for the month / year to reach. They can be personal or work related but it’s important that these goals are aimed towards bettering yourself. Make your goals realistic, you’ll let yourself down if you make them too high. You may encounter some hurdles along the way, but remember it's worth the reward in the end!

Step 6: Think positive

Being a positive thinker does not come naturally to all of us and at times we may find it hard to try and create a positive outcome from difficult situations. Psychology expert Kendra Cherry states that positive thinkers have better stress coping skills, stronger immunity, and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Positive thinking isn’t restricted to helping improve your mental health, but also extends to bettering your physical and emotional wellbeing. Start small by telling yourself 5 positive things every morning, this will help you have a more optimistic outlook on the day. For more tips, read our article on Ways to Create a Healthy Mindset.

Step 7: Treat yourself

Treating yourself is important for a happy, healthy and ultimately balanced life. You shouldn’t feel bad about occasionally indulging and you shouldn’t deny your body the foods you like. In saying that, you also shouldn’t binge in sweet or fatty foods - have enough to satisfy your cravings. If you’re feeling overworked and run down treat yourself with a night out with friends, or save up for something you really want to buy.

Step 8: Be organised

Do you often find yourself in bed at night going through your to-do list for the next day? It’s time to de-clutter your brain and get organised. Try these simple tips:

  • Get a diary – leave your head clutter free of dates, times and lists and write them all down
  • Make snacks and meals ahead – prepare food ahead for lunch and dinner
  • Create a routine and stick to it – a routine helps to keep everything in balance, creating order in situations of chaos

Being organised can lead to you being more proactive and using your time wisely, meaning you spend less time overwhelmed and stressed and have more time to do the things you love.

Step 9: De-stress

Stressing can be all-consuming leading to a lack of sleep, poor eating habits and negative self-talk. Stress less with these tips:

  • Meditate – practice deep breathing and meditation exercises daily when you feel tension rising.
  • Go for a walk – Clear you head and get away from your desk
  • Drink herbal tea – herbal tea calms and relaxes the mind and body

Don’t sweat the small stuff; if you have bigger problems, act logical and try to map out all the potential solutions. Read more tips in our article on Reducing Anxiety.

Step 10: Spend time with family and friends

Having a reliable support system is so important. As the people who understand you the most, your family and friends are your go-to for advice, to vent, or just to talk. Getting a second opinion on problems that you’re experiencing can lead you to making fewer rash decisions and lead you to more logical, thought out resolutions. Family and friends have your best interest at heart and are the kind of people you should set aside the time to see. This support system is both mentally and emotionally fulfilling, keeping you rational, happier and healthier.
