Baby, it’s cold out — and that means all you want to do is stay in, rug up and sip hot tea. We hear you. Staying motivated through the winter is tough. But don’t give up just yet! While the winter months mean colder temperatures, less sunlight and generally dampened spirits, there are ways to still feel motivated and boost your moodwhen it’s freezing and miserable outside.
Here, five tips to keep you motivated this winter no matter how cold it is (and it’s cold!).
layer up
Sure, leaving the house (and the heater) doesn’t seem all that appealing. But what about when there’s the promise of stylish, snug-as-a-bug, super warm layers? Yes, you can still dress to impress and feel warm at the same time, it just comes down to smart, trans-seasonal layering and layering the right pieces to keep you warm pre and post workout. Think lightweight layers that don’t let you overheat when you go hard on a run, protective layers when the rain lashes and wind whips, and cosy, fuzzy layers for gentle movement (like dreamy winter yoga pants). So don’t think winter means bulky, banal outfits. Winter workout clothes are not only all kinds of cute but protect you from the elements and counteract the cold.
find a friend
Fact: there’s no better way to be accountable for a workout than when there’s someone else involved. Besides, running in cold weather solo doesn’t exactly sound like the dream scenario, but when you’re running side by side with your bestie, suddenly a winter jog sounds a little more enjoyable! So organise a weekly meet with a mate and get moving. Include a coffee and pastry post-workout and matching winter activewear, like knits in alternate colours for added fun. Making a commitment to a friend is the best way to keep your exercise up (without the inevitable excuses).
try your hand at indoor sport
If you’re not entirely sold on the whole running in cold weather thing (we don’t blame you), venture out (or in) and try some indoor sport. Netball and basketball is always a winner, but for something a little more exciting, try your hand (literally) at squash. There’s even indoor tennis and pickleball courts if the French Open has you inspired but you don’t want to freeze your butt off. Or, tap your inner adventurer and go rock climbing or bouldering (a fun variant of rock climbing with shorter walls and squishy padded mats so there’s no ropes or gear). And if you really want to have some good ol’ fashioned fun, try trampolining. And the best part? You get to wear both your cute summer and cute winter activewear — a layer for inside, and a layer for out! It’s a win-win.
let there be light
One of the saddest things about winter is the lack of sunshine. We all know sunlight is a natural mood-booster and source of Vitamin D, but unfortunately winter robs us of those extra hours of the good stuff. So instead of wallowing inside and making your winter slump worse, make an effort to chase the sun (you can do it in your winter workout clothes!). According to the Cancer Council, spending time outdoors in the middle of the day with some skin uncovered in winter is actually a good thing. “Being physically active (e.g. gardening or going for a brisk walk) also helps boost vitamin D levels.” Like a big dose of TLC for your body and mind, take advantage of those few hours of sunlight.
don't skip exercise
It’s easy to reach for the snooze button when it’s cold and dark out, but there really is nothing better than exercise to get those endorphins going. Working out obviously improves blood circulation and gets your heart pumping, but it also allows your body to regulate its temperature more effectively (meaning a warmer you!). If outdoor activities like running in cold weather are too much to bear, stick to gym-based pursuits like Pilates, spin, HIIT and weights. Also, heated yoga is made for the cooler seasons, so pop on your winter yoga pants and get your downward dog on — now is the time to embrace the zen (and the warmth!).
