How To | Eat Your Way To Clear Skin

Pimples and acne are a lot more common than we would like. Acne is not limited to the teenage years - stress, hormone imbalances and bad eating habits can cause pimples to still arise in our 20’s and 30’s. Along with exercise and a good skin care routine, having a well-balanced diet is key to improving the quality of your skin. Eat your way to flawless skin by adding these foods to your diet.

Rid your wrinkles. Full of skin clearing antioxidants, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries – all the berries! – are one of the best additions you can make to your diet. Rich in fibre, berries produce a regular insulin output, keeping you fuller for longer.

Is there anything tea can’t do? Herbal teas, like peppermint and green tea, have endless healing properties. As a natural calmer, herbal tea helps to relieve stress (a common acne aggravator), reduces redness and fights skin inflammation. This stuff is seriously good for your skin!

If your skin is feeling scaly and dry it’s probably because you don’t have enough vitamin B in your system. Salmon provides your body with a vitamin B that produces fatty acids that act as a natural moisturiser for your skin. High in protein, this fish speeds up the skins natural healing process giving you flawless skin in no time.

Delay the aging process. Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C and contain lycopene – the pigment that gives tomatoes their red colouring - which stimulates skin circulation. By aiding collagen production, tomatoes help to keep your skin firm and tight!

The all-round body cleanser. Containing combined nutrients including calcium, sodium, magnesium and vitamin E and A, beetroot is full of skin clearing properties essential for health and healing. This purple root vegetable eliminates toxins from the body allowing your skin to get back its natural healthy glow.

Sweet potato

Eat the rainbow. Load your body up on lots of colourful fruit and vegetables to ensure you’re keeping your body full of the essential vitamins that keep your body and skin hydrated. As a vegetable that is rich in complex carbohydrates sweet potato allows for a slow release of sugar into your body, therefore regulating your blood sugar levels, helping to combat stress and elevate mood. Sweet potato also contains beta-carotene which converts to vitamin A when digested and helps improve the circulation of oxygen to the skin enhancing skin colour and appearance.

Get your skin to glow! Full of vitamin E and C, avocado oil stimulates the production of collagen in the skin, improving the skins tone and texture while reducing skin inflammation. Add avocado to a salad or in a DIY face mask to keep your skin looking and feeling soft and supple.

The ultimate skin booster. Made from soya beans, tofu is a great healing vegetable. Full of protein, calcium and healthy unsaturated fats, it’s a great combination for anyone suffering a skin condition. Tofu is rich in antioxidant minerals, copper, iron and manganese, giving your skin the lift it needs.

A zinc deficiency may be the cause of your skin and acne problems. Snacking on nuts, particularly almonds, Brazil nuts and pumpkin seeds, will help to maintain healthy skin. Packed with vitamin E, nuts can also protect against skin damage caused by the sun. This healthy snack contains multiple vitamins and minerals (copper, manganese, magnesium, potassium, calcium and iron) that are essential to skin health and function.

YES! Chocolate is good for you! Chocolate, particularly dark, is full of antioxidants that reduce the roughness of your skin and protect it against sun damage. Chocolate with less than 70% cacao contains more sugar and milk which may cause your skin to break out rather than enhance the quality of your skin. It is recommended to have a couple (2 max) of squares a day to increase your skin glow. We advise eating chocolate that is at least 70% cacao to get maximum benefits. Try directly applying a cocoa based cream or scrub as the caffeine in chocolate reduces skin puffiness and hydrates the skin, making it firm and supple.
