How to | Tan safe
Excited about the return of summer but worried about revealing that white winter skin? We share below our favourite ways to achieve that flawless sun kissed glow without harming your skin.
First, lets get back to basics -
DANGERS OF SUN TANNING
The biggest danger of sun tanning is the exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays which can cause:
- Loss of skin elasticity
- Skin discolouration
- Premature aging of the skin (wrinkling and damage)
- Sunburn and painful peeling
- Skin cancer / melanomas
HOW TO AVOID GETTING BURNT
- Use sunscreen (at least SPF 30+) and reapply every 2 hours
- Wear protective clothing – hat, sunglasses, light long sleeved shirt
- Sit in the shade – under an umbrella / tent
- Drink plenty of water

METHODS OF SAFE TANNING
Salon tanning done by professionals with spray guns or in an enclosed spray machine booth. Self-spray tanning canisters are also available in local stores and salons for at home application. This type of tan can last from 1-2 weeks with proper maintenance and care.
GRADUAL LOTION TANNERS
Usually self-tanners sold in the form of lotions, creams or foam and are directly applied onto the skin. The results are not immediate as the lotion needs to applied daily to build on the tan until the desired colour tone is achieved.
Tinted cosmetic bronzers are easily customizable and come in liquid, powder, gel or lotion form. This type of tan is used as a daily applicator and can be easily washed off with soap and water.
